PATHANAMTHITTA: In a freak incident, a female leopard was killed by a mob that came to the rescue of a youth who was attacked by it at Angamozhi in this district of Kerala today. The incident occurred when forest guards and a large number of people were searching for the leopard, hiding in bushes at a rubber estate.

The youth, Kuttan, was suddenly attacked by the leopard which emerged from the bushes. However, Kuttan, a member of Daya, a group of elephant lovers, managed to overpower the wild animal in a sudden move. Seeing this, the mob rushed for his help and overpowered the animal with their bare hands, leaving it to death due to suffocation.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 28, 2012,

A Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) of the New Delhi-Thiruvananthapuram Rajdhani Express was on Tuesday arrested for allegedly misbehaving with a woman passenger.

Ramesh Kumar, a resident of New Delhi, was arrested on the basis of a written complaint given by the middle-aged woman passenger alleging that he misbehaved with her while the train was passing through Udupi and Mangalore on Monday.

The woman said the ticket checker approached her when the train passed Mudgao station and her coach was almost empty. He sought to befriend her by offering tea or coffee and even tried to touch her.

She informed her relatives about the harassment over mobile phone.

The matter was brought to the notice of the Railway Protection Force by her relatives and the TTE was taken into custody from Thrissur.

On the arrival of the train in the wee hours, he was arrested and questioned by the RPF officials. He was subjected to medical examination and found to be mentally and physically fit.

  • Texture 'indicates freshness' and is main indicator of which foods we prefer
By Tamara Cohen

Ever wondered why you ask for vinegar in the chip shop but prefer ketchup with French fries?
A team of researchers has come up with the answer. It’s all down to how the condiments alter the texture of our favourite snack.
Some scientists believe texture is one of the main indicators of whether we like a food or not – although we may not be aware of this – as it indicates freshness.
Thin and crispy: French fries (left) absorbed vinegar more quickly than more traditional chunkier chip shop style chips (right)

The Leeds University researchers found skinny French fries absorb a large amount of vinegar and it rapidly makes them soggy.
Thicker ones from the chip shop were found to be 30 per cent more resilient because of their large surface area – so kept more of their crispness.
Professor Brent Murray, who led the research, said: ‘These preliminary investigations suggest that the effects of different condiments on the texture of different sorts of chips plays a large part in deciding what condiments or sauces will taste best.
Apart from the flavour of any sauce, the most suitable condiment choice might be one that doesn’t alter the texture significantly.’
The research involved dousing different types of chips with tomato ketchup, vinegar or barbecue sauce.
A survey to accompany the findings showed most people – 45 per cent – preferred the chip shop chips and the majority who chose a condiment picked salt and vinegar.
The 16 per cent who preferred fries mostly had ketchup, and one in ten chose wedges and generally preferred barbecue sauce, according to the survey for The Potato Council.
Caroline Evans, of The Potato Council, said: ‘It’s interesting that people tend to have such strong preferences for their condiments and we wanted to find out why.’

Older mothers at 'greater risk of depression' due to worrying about themselves and the health of their babies

Older mothers at 'greater risk of depression' due to worrying about themselves and the health of their babies

By Fiona Macrae

  • MydeaMedia

Anxiety about their own health and that of their babies could leave older mothers open to depression, research suggests.
A study of thousands of mothers of children aged five and under found depression rates to be far higher in those aged 40 to 44 than among those who were younger.
Though the cause was unclear, anxiety in pregnancy could be a large factor, according to the researcher behind the study.
Depression rates have been found to be far higher in mothers aged 40 to 44 than among those who were younger
Depression rates have been found to be far higher in mothers aged 40 to 44 than among those who were younger
Older mothers and their babies are at a risk of a host of health problems and anxiety in pregnancy is known to raise the odds of depression afterwards.
Giulia Muraca, a PhD student at Canada’s University of British Columbia, studied almost 8,000 women who had given birth in the previous five years.
They were asked if they had been depressed over the past 12 months.
The group of women who gave birth while in their late 30s and early 40s were five times as likely to have been depressed than the mothers with similar lifestyles who were five years younger when they had their baby.
Miss Muraca also looked at women who hadn’t had babies in the past five years and found that age appeared to cut their odds of depression.
This may be because age tends to bring with it more stability in both finances and relationships.
But for women who have children when they are aged 35-plus, these benefits may be cancelled out by health fears, the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s annual conference heard.
Worries: Having a children at an older age can affect a woman's mental stability
Worries: Having a children at an older age can affect a woman's mental stability
Older mothers run a greater risk of problem pregnancies, miscarriage and stillbirths.
Deterioration of their eggs with time also leaves them at greater risk of having babies with Down’s syndrome and other genetic disorders.
And their age makes them more prone to arthritis, depression, cancer and heart attacks as they bring up their children.
Postponing motherhood also affects partners – men’s sperm counts deteriorate gradually each year and children of older men have an increased risk of schizophrenia.

'Older mothers may also suffer from loneliness and a lack of support, if most of their friends had their children years earlier'

Doctors say the optimum age for giving birth starts at 20 and ends at 35.
Despite the risks, though, more and more women are delaying motherhood.
The number of babies born to women aged 35 to 39 in England and Wales more than doubled between 1990 and 2010, to 115,841 a year.
Births to women aged 40 to 44 almost trebled, official statistics show.
Miss Muraca stressed that her work is preliminary and the psychological risks of late motherhood need more research, but added: ‘There is a lot of rhetoric talking about all the biological risk and that is really discomforting for women.’
Older mothers may also suffer from loneliness and a lack of support, if most of their friends had their children years earlier.
The researcher said that another possibility is that women who have spent years building their career may struggle to cope with giving up their job, or find the adjustment of returning to work after having their baby hard to take.
Miss Muraca added that if her findings are confirmed by other studies, it could lead to older mothers being monitored for signs of depression to catch any problems earlier.

Warning: Twitter co-founder Christopher Stone said the website was designed to be dipped in and out of

It's enough to make any PR agent wince.
The co-founder of Twitter has urged its 500million users to get off the micro-blogging website and do something else instead.
Christopher Stone said he did not want anybody to spend hours using the site because it is ‘unhealthy’.
Instead he said they should dip in and find what they want – then stop and do other things.
Mr Stone was one of the four men who created Twitter in 2006 and has remained creative director, helping it become one of the most influential social networks in the world.
But users have repeatedly complained that it is incredibly addictive, with some staying logged on for 12 hours at a time.
At a conference in Montreal, Mr Stone, 37, said using Twitter that much was not what he intended. ‘To me, that sounds unhealthy,’ he said.

‘I like the kind of engagement where you go to the website and you leave because you’ve found what you are looking for or you found something very interesting and you learned something.
‘I think that’s a much healthier engagement. Obviously, we want you to come frequently.’

Rapid growth: Twitter has just passed the billion user mark
Twitter, which has around  30million users in Britain, allows them to post short messages – no longer than 140 characters – for others to see online.
Among the first celebrities to use the site was Stephen Fry, who tweeted a picture of himself  when he got stuck in a lift in 2009.
In his speech, Mr Stone admitted that when Twitter first launched many thought it would fail because they did not think it was useful. ‘Nobody thought it was a good idea,’ he said.
Recruits who struggle to speak
‘And I distinctly remember my colleague Evan Williams saying, ‘Well, neither is ice cream. Should we ban ice cream and all joy or can we have something that’s just fun? What’s wrong with that?’
The speech has echoes of the infamous comments by tycoon Gerald Ratner in 1991, who effectively destroyed his cut-price jewellery empire when he said one of the firm’s products was ‘total ***p’.

Desert wrecks: The desolate ship cemetery where camels walk beside rusting vessels buried in sand

Desert wrecks: The desolate ship cemetery where camels walk beside rusting vessels buried in sand
By Emma Reynolds

These are the desert wrecks - great hulking ships scattered across a wide expanse of sand in Central Asia.
The rusting vessels once sailed proudly across the 26,000 sq mile Aral Sea between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
Now they lie in a vast, arid plain that provides no hint of the fact it was once a lake the size of Scotland.

The dried-up stretch was once a popular spot for fishermen, but they have long since abandoned its shores, leaving their boats behind.

Now an incredible variety of majestic ships stand desolate in the baking sun, as camels wander languidly around their corroded hulls.
The lake has shrunk by 90 per cent in the past 50 years in what has been called one of the planet's 'most shocking environmental disasters.'
It began to disappear back in the 1960s, when Russia diverted the rivers that fed the lake to assist irrigation at their cotton plants.

The shrunken sea has ruined the once-robust fishing economy and left stranded trawlers sinking into the wastelands like permanent features of the landscape.
As the water evaporated, it left layers of highly salted sand, which winds can carry as far as Scandinavia and Japan.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Central Asian leaders to step up efforts to solve the problem after touring the sea by helicopter last April.

11 Bollywood stars who went naked

11 Bollywood stars who went Naked

MydeaMedia

With Ashmit Patel posing in the buff for an underwear campaign in a men’s magazine recently, we bring you 10 Bollywooders who went naked before the camera
undefined
1.Simi Garewal in ‘Mera Naam Joker’ and ‘Siddhartha’ (1972) – Newly returned from England, Simi Garewal bagged some of the most prestigious films from her generation, though she never found the commercial success of her peers. In both ‘Mera Naam Joker’ by Raj Kapoor and ‘Siddhartha’, a film adapted from Hermann Hesse’s novel of the same name (both 1972), she sheds her quintessential whites and pretty much everything else too.

2.Protima Bedi in the Cine Blitz promotional campaign (1974) – Celebrated danseuse and Kabir Bedi’s bohemian wife stripped down to nothing and ran naked on Juhu beach as part of a promotional campaign to launch filmi rag Cine Blitz in 1974. She made headlines, naturally.

3. Dimple Kapadia in ‘Saagar’ (1985) – Her introduction to Rishi Kapoor in the film went like this: a young village belle goes for a dip in the ocean. Then when returning she wraps herself in a sarong, notices that Rishi Kapoor has been watching her through plastic weeds hanging above him. She trips and her sarong gets undone for a split second. Yet, to many, this qualified as at least a half-monty moment in Bollywood.
Protima Bedi stirred a hornet's nest with her morning jog in 1974
Mandakini may have been from small-town Meerut, but her transparent debut made her a national entity4.  Mandakini in ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ (1985) – A cliché but it does remain one of the most bare-breasted moments in Hindi cinema. Mandakini became a household name with this blockbuster, but also vanished just as quickly following allegations of her being Dawood Ibrahim’s moll.

SRK has never been as randy as he was with Deepa Memsaab...
5.       Deepa Sahi in ‘Maya Memsaab’ (1993) – In this film, director Ketan Mehta’s wife played a day-glo Madame Bovary, a novel by Gustave Flaubert in which the wife of a doctor gives in to illicit affairs and hedonism to escape the banality of provincial life. And escape she does in what is perhaps Shah Rukh Khan’s most carnal performance on screen as well. Deepa Sahi exposed her breasts and features in numerous romps with King Khan in this awkward adaptation.
6.  Mamta Kulkarni on the Stardust cover (1993) – She vanished just as quickly as she arrived too. However, in the early 1990s, Mamta Kulkarni was in the eye of a storm for appearing topless on the cover of Stardust magazine. Lawsuits were slapped and last-minute bails were sought in India’s most regressive decade, but this was a first for a Bollywood actress after Protima Bedi’s legendary Full Monty on Juhu beach in 1974 (see earlier note).
They said she’s in Dubai now, but Bombay was so much fun with her circa 1993
7.       Anu Agarwal in ‘The Cloud Door’ by Mani Kaul (1994) – This short Indo-German film by acclaimed  director Mani Kaul was inspired by erotic themes in Hindi and Muslim literature. True to its genre, it featured the ‘Aashiqui’ girl naked in bed with Murad Ali in a rather steamy sequence.

India's first male supermodel got sneaky and wore only sneakers for an ad once...
8.       Milind Soman and Madhu Sapre in the Tuff shoes campaign (1995) – Okay, granted Madhu Sapre never bothered with Bollywood, but Milind Soman did. So this duo qualifies as a tinsel town couple that did ruffle many a right-wing feather when appearing in the buff for a sports shoe campaign in the mid-‘90s.
9.Hemant Birje in ‘Divine Lovers’ (1997) - Director B Subhash made him a national sensation with ‘Tarzan’, a 1985 blockbuster film that Hemant Birje and his co-star Kimi Katkar are most remembered by. By the time Birje was forgotten, he was summoned to act in B Subhash’s English-language film ‘Divine Lovers’, starring ‘Grease 2’ hero Maxwell Caulfield and Marc Zuber. Packaged as an erotic film set in exotic India, the film was initially to star Anu Agarwal, who developed cold feet based on the sheer amount of nudity required. Eventually they roped in some LA actress. The skin-flick bombed and B Subhash lost a lot of money. But Hemant Birje did appear in a flash nude moment in this one.
The quintessential he-man from the jungle was seen his birthday suit in mentor B Subhash's English-language turkey Divine Lovers
Helen Brodie had some pretty steamy scenes in Jag Mundhra’s Monsoon
 10.   Helen Brodie in Jag Mundhra’s ‘Monsoon’ (2001) – Her debut at the cusp of the millennium, ‘Hadh Kar Di Aapne’, sank without a trace. Then a year later, Helen Brodie truly crossed over. To LA, on the sets of soft porn filmmaker Jag Mundhra’s ‘Monsoon’. And hadh kar di Mundhra saab ne! Brodie found some pretty significant exposure with this flick.

11.   Nandana Sen in ‘Rang Rasiya’ (2008) – Daughter of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, Nandana Sen stars in Ketan Mehta’s ‘Rang Rasiya’. The film is based on India’s most celebrated calendar artist, Raja Ravi Varma played by the brooding Randeep Hooda. Sen plays Randeep Hooda’s muse and since Raja Ravi Varma painted nudes, Nandana too gave us some mirch masala.
She is the daughter of a Nobel Prize-winning economist. She was also rather economical with her clothes in Rang Rasiya

Callous Tihar woke up after baby of woman who gave birth in jail died

Callous Tihar woke up after baby of woman who gave birth in jail died

By Neetu Chandra
MydeaMedia

Even the worst of criminals have certain rights under the Indian justice system. In the case of Tanuja Gnanadurai, though, the Tihar Jail authorities thought otherwise.

Tanuja, alias Sonia Mann, is a conwoman who landed in Tihar last November for defrauding people. While the courts are yet to decide whether she is guilty or not, the 29- year-old has already been punished in the most traumatic way.

Tanuja was heavily pregnant when she was arrested in connection with a fake job racket on November 2, 2011. But the callous Tihar authorities did not bother to provide her any medical facility.
Tanuja Gnanadurai¿s baby was born in Tihar without any medical help on November 2, 2011, and died of spinal injury four days later
Tanuja Gnanadurai¿s baby was born in Tihar without any medical help on November 2, 2011, and died of spinal injury four days later
It was after she delivered the baby prematurely that they finally woke up. They took her and the baby to a hospital. But the baby's spinal cord had broken during the unassisted delivery in the jail and it died a few days later.
'She was pregnant when sent to Tihar. She was never taken to any hospital for medical check-ups. She delivered the baby on November 28. It was then that she and the baby were taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya hospital but the baby died after four days,' a person close to Tanuja said.
That was not the end of Tanuja's ordeal. She was not even let off for the baby's burial. It was at the court's intervention that she got bail to perform the baby's last rites.
'After the baby died, she was sent back to Tihar. The infant's body was lying in the mortuary for more than 20 days as Tanuja's family has abandoned her. She was finally granted bail to perform the last rites of the baby,' the person said.
Tanuja was granted bail on December 24 by a Saket court. Tanuja is currently out on bail, but still incarcerated in misfortunes. Her family has already cutoff all ties with her, not because she took to crime but because she was an unwed mother. Not even the death of her baby moved them. None of her relatives came to perform the last rites of the baby.
The Tihar authorities are, however, indifferent and say she wasn't given any medical help because she did not inform them that she was pregnant.
'She didn't disclose her pregnancy . When she was brought here, she wrote her marital status as 'single'. She was a little overweight, so the medical team couldn't figure out she was pregnant,' Sunil Gupta, public relation officer of Tihar, said.
The explanation is baffling as, by Gupta's own admission, she was seven months pregnant.
'She delivered the baby on the night of November 28. As soon we came to know, Tanuja and the baby were rushed to DDU Hospital. The doctors said the baby was born premature in the seventh month,' he said.
Gupta added: 'We don't know who was the father of her child. We have proper pre- and post-natal medical facilities inside the jail provided a person tells us that she is pregnant. Special care is also given to the mother and the child.'
Tanuja is from Chennai. Her father is a retired railway officer. The police arrested her from PVR Saket where she and her accomplice Vijaypal, 30, were fighting with four youths, who alleged that the duo cheated them of `10 lakh by promising them merchant navy jobs in Canada.
Tanjua was allegedly taking the help of some Nigerian nationals in creating fake email IDs, hacking emails, and gaining access to high commissions and embassies.
Tale of torment

Osama bin Laden's secret compound is DEMOLISHED in Pakistan 10 months after deadly SEAL team raid

Osama bin Laden's secret compound is DEMOLISHED in Pakistan 10 months after deadly SEAL team raid

By  REPORTER MydeaMedia

The three-storey Pakistan compound where Osama bin Laden spent his last years and was killed by U.S Navy SEALs last May is being demolished.

Rings of police kept spectators and journalists away from the compound, which the government began tearing down on Saturday night under powerful flood lights without providing prior notice.

Three mechanized backhoes ripped into the building, and large trucks carried away the debris, according to an Associated Press reporter who was able to get close enough to see the work.

Bin Laden's lair: Local residents watch as the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where the al Qaeda leader spent his last days is slowly demolished
Pakistan was outraged by the covert American raid in the northwestern town of Abbottabad because it was not informed beforehand - a decision the U.S. explained was driven by concerns that someone in the government might tip off bin Laden.
The terror leader's death was cheered across the globe, but many Pakistanis were angry that the U.S. violated its territory and that its troops were powerless to stop American soldiers from attacking a compound located next to the country's elite military academy.

The backhoes - heavy machines with strong crane-like digging arms - have torn down the tall boundary walls around bin Laden's compound and have destroyed more than half of the main building, where the al-Qaida chief lived for years with his wives and children.
Army soldiers who were guarding the compound Saturday night handed authority over to the police in the morning and left. Work continued Sunday morning but halted around midday for unknown reasons.

Pakistani officials have declined to say why they decided to begin demolition.

Residents of the normally sleepy town of Abbottabad were divided on what the government should do with the compound in the aftermath of the raid. Some thought it should be destroyed, but others believed it should be turned into a tourist attraction to help the town earn money. There was always the danger, however, that it could also draw al-Qaida supporters.

American officials said they buried bin Laden's body at sea to avoid giving his followers a burial place that could become a makeshift shrine.
Many U.S. officials expressed disbelief that bin Laden could have lived in Abbottabad for around six years without the Pakistani government knowing. But the U.S. has not found any evidence that senior Pakistani officials knew of the al-Qaida chief's whereabouts.
The U.S. Navy SEALs who attacked bin Laden's compound on May 2 infiltrated by helicopter from neighboring Afghanistan. The raid, which lasted around 40 minutes, was a serious blow to the already troubled U.S.-Pakistan relationship.

Pakistan responded by kicking out more than 100 U.S. troops training Pakistanis in counterterrorism operations and reduced the level of intelligence cooperation.

Some members of Congress called on the U.S. to cut of the billions of dollars of military and civilian aid to Pakistan unless Islamabad explained bin Laden's presence in Abbottabad and boosted cooperation on the Afghan war. The aid has continued, although at a somewhat lower level.
